Hi I'm thinking of purchasing this for a project I'm about to start however the text I'll animating has a gradient applied to is and therfore will most likely be a mask, will the effects still work?
Yes, but you will need to apply a symbol effect and not a text effect. Also you will need to apply the effect on whole movieclip, which in your case will contain the text and the mask with the gradient.
